9-R Amendment 66 Fact Sheet-9-25-13

Amendment 66 Fact Sheet

Background:
An initiative will be on the ballot in Colorado giving voters an opportunity to invest further in education in Colorado. Over the past four years, public school funding has dropped by more than a billion dollars due to the lagging economy across our country.  During that time, Colorado has passed exciting educational reform initiatives leading to positive change in our schools and school districts, however these changes have increased the burden on our educational institutions through unfunded mandates.

The new initiative, called Amendment 66, will come to voters on the fall ballot, and will attempt to replace these lost revenues and implement a funding model that will stabilize school funding.  This implementation will help districts cover the cost of programs for students with specialized needs, and recognize the importance of early childhood programs in the state.

Facts:
·      The ballot initiative, if approved, will return Colorado to income tax rates similar to those in place in 2000, raise $950 million dollars for public education, and ensure that 43% of the state’s general revenues in the future support K-12 education within Colorado.
·      Colorado currently ranks 46th out of 50 states in K-12 funding.  While this ballot initiative represents a significant amount of money and will lead to an increase in income tax for working citizens in Colorado, the additional revenue will only cause Colorado to rise to 41st out of 50 states.
·      If voters approve this ballot initiative, the district would realize a little over $4 million dollars in new revenues allowing us to eliminate deficit spending, and to further invest in opportunities to address student needs and supports within our schools.
·      The initiative seeks to raise Colorado’s income tax rate to 5 percent, a 0.37 percentage-point increase. High-wage earners would pay a 5.9 percent rate on income more than $75,000, while still paying the 5 percent rate on their earnings less than $75,000.
·      This year, the district is spending almost $1.6 million dollars in deficit to ensure that our students have access to critical programs and to allow us to maintain small class sizes.  Durango 9-R has notably smaller class sizes when  compared to other districts in the state.

Leadville, Colorado – Race 2 of the Colorado High School Cycling League 2013 series climbed to Leadville for the Cloud City Challenge at the Colorado Mountain College Timberline Campus. The 5.9-mile course with approximately 630 feet of climbing per lap was a thrilling combination of Lake County trails maintained by the Cloud City Wheelers. The new course designed by local Coach Bruce Kelly received rave reviews from veteran racers of the Colorado League who enthusiastically commented that it was their favorite course ever!
The high altitude favored Division 1 teams from mountain areas with Animas taking first, Vail Valley second, and Summit third for the day. Vail Valley moved past Fairview and Boulder in the overall team Division 1 standings. Grand Valley and Durango maintained first and second among Division 2 teams and Green Mtn moved to third overall. The Leadville team proudly took third for the day.
Locals rallied as Leadville is a new host city for the Colorado League. Lake County High School Principal, Christina Gosselin, was happy to welcome participants as an early morning parking volunteer. Aarika Johnson, Leadville JV racer, warmed up the chilly morning with a resounding acapella version of the national anthem. A freezing rain spurred race officials to reduce the girls’ race by 1 lap for all categories. The Freshman and Sophomore boys enjoyed a warm sunny race while inclement weather caused the Varsity and JV boys races to be called early for the second time this season.
Animas High Principal, Michael Ackerman witnessed the team victory and commented, "The Colorado League showcases the commitment, perseverance and athleticism of regional student athletes. Whether it was a freshman rider tackling their first single track race or the amazing talents of the League's varsity racers, the positive attitudes and camaraderie exhibited in Leadville was something special to behold. Undoubtedly, this is an amazing opportunity for students to experience the area's natural beauty and I cannot wait for more great action at Race #3!" The Colorado League series travels to the Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch in Elbert October 6th before the series finale in Eagle October 20th.

AHS Phones

Thank you all for your patience while we have been refining our phone system at AHS.  We have been installing a new phone system which will be up and running tomorrow morning.  We are aware that the phones have been down today and at various times in the past few weeks.  We apologize for the inconvenience and we look forward to having our new system workingtomorrow.

Transportation

We are excited to announce that beginning tomorrow, Friday, all students are welcome to ride the HUB Bus from DHS to AHS in the mornings and afternoons.  We have spent a few weeks determining the needs and usage for the HUB Bus and we are ready to open it to the whole community.  Each student who wishes to ride the bus must complete paperwork for the 9-R school district.  Please see the Main Office for more information.

In the unlikely event that we have a day when more students want to ride the bus than we have space available, we will give first priority to AHS students who are currently participating in an extracurricular activity at DHS.  In that situation, students who aren't able to ride the HUB Bus will be directed to the local public trolley which will take them to AHS, in the morning, or back downtown, in the afternoon.  There is a $1 charge for a ride on the trolley.  If your son/daughter is not participating in an extracurricular activity, please make sure they have a dollar to pay if this happens.

Can you donate some recreational equipment?

Now that we have settling into our new campus, we would like to add some recreational activities for our hard-working students.  We are looking for two ping-pong tables and a portable outdoor basketball hoop for our students to use at lunch time. Additionally, if you have any other equipment you think would be appropriate, please let us know.  Please contact the Main Office before bringing anything in.  Thank you.

School Picture Day

Next Friday, Sept. 13 will be AHS School Picture Day.  At the beginning of next week we will give students packets to order school pictures.  Please help your son/daughter remember to dress nicely for their picture!

Wilderness First Aid Opportunity

Do you love the outdoors?  Do you, your family and friends go on fun mountain adventures?  Whether you're a mountain biker, skier, snowboarder, backpacker or climber, this is an opportunity you shouldn't miss!  The Silverton Avalanche School is offering a special Wilderness First Aid course for interested Animas students.

LINK

Leading Internships for New Knowledge (LINK) has a new program coordinator at the helm, as Rachael Sands has moved into full-time college counseling here at AHS.  Libby Cowles has begun her work with juniors, helping them connect with great mentors and internship placements that will allow them to make meaningful contributions to a wide variety of businesses and organizations in Durango and beyond.  LINK internships run March 3rd through 21st this year.  Find out more by visiting the LINK webpage at http://ahslink.weebly.com.  Please contact Libby at libby.cowles@animashighschool.com if you have contacts at local businesses or organizations that might mentor AHS juniors with appropriate interests and skills.  Libby will also coordinate Power Lunches, monthly presentations for interested students from community professionals sharing ideas and experiences that inspire and inform.  More about Power Lunches here: http://ahslink.weebly.com/power-lunches.html  Again, feel free to contact Libby with any ideas—or questions!  She's really excited to step into this role at the School, connecting AHS and the community in a variety of ways.

Catered Lunches

As a reminder, please send in checks or make a CC payment for $30, $60 or $90 at a time rather than sending in $6 each day with your student.  This makes it a tedious and long process for both the Front desk manager and the book keeper.  Thank you for helping us make things run more smoothly.

Windows 8

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, we are currently working on a solution for our students who have Windows 8 and cannot connect to our Internet.  We recognize this is frustrating for students and parents and we apologize for the inconvenience.  While we address this problem, students are welcome to borrow computers from us or use their personal hotspots.  We hope to have this resolved soon.

PowerSchool

This week we mailed information to each family with instructions on how to access PowerSchool to track their student's academic progress.  Please contact Maureen Truax,maureen.truax@animashighschool.com, if you have any questions or did not get the information.
